About
What is Diaspora?
Diaspora is Sangam’s monthly newsletter which serves as a source of information for what’s going on in South Asia and the issues facing South Asian Americans today. Diaspora was started in October 2001 and has blossomed into a full-fledged newsletter distributed to UNC students and surrounding communities. It includes current news, editorials, book and movie reviews, features, and even political cartoons – all contributed and compiled by Sangam members. Diaspora’s mission is directly aligned with Sangam’s mission – specifically, it strives to:
- Explore and relate through the literary and artistic media: South Asian issues faced in the Diaspora here and in the eight countries of South Asia.
- Educate the university campus and surrounding communities on South Asian issues ranging from politics to pop culture
It also features political new articles addressing current events of South Asia, editorials by UNC students, and personal anecdotes relating aspects of life for South Asians living in America and on campus. If you enjoy keeping abreast of South Asian issues and communicating your views to others through a journalistic medium, we encourage you to contribute to Diaspora. If writing is not your thing, we encourage you to read our issues and provide feedback. Please contact Diaspora Editors for questions, comments, or more information.
